Kinnari Gatha

The Bengal Renaissance created a space in Bengali theater for women actors to represent female characters but the pioneers who came forward walked a thorn filled path to take the stage. Many of them came from red-light areas. With neither the background that supported them nor opportunities that helped groom them as dancers, singers or stage performers, these outstanding artists fought stigma, overcame all hurdles to outshine on Bengal’s stage, film and records in the early 20 th Century. Kinnari Gatha will showcase the story of their struggles, brave lives, star crossed loves and their triumphs on stage. Dance performances by Rituparna Sengupta, and Avirup Sengupta and his group, narration by Satinath Mukhopadhyay, voice and songs by Riddhi Bandyopadhyay and Dr. Devajit Bandyopadhyay in this presentation will surely take you on an unforgettable emotional journey

About the program

Cactus the First and Ultimate Band

Cactus, the eponymous Bangla band, grew in the dessert of the Bangla Band scene in the 90s. With experimentations like folk rock and influences of funk rock in Bengali songs they shook the Bengali music scene. Their songs Mon, Halud Pakhi became band anthems for the youth of that time and continue as fan favorites. But they were not the first. There were those like Mohiner Ghoraguli who came before them to create this path breaking genre of music as the first Bangla band, and of course, those that have followed since. Cactus will travel through time to trace the history of Bangla Band. Sidhu, Pota and their team will rock you with some of the most famous compositions in the genre. So don’t forget to tune in to your favorite numbers!
